Most breast lumps are benign. Two of the commonest are cysts and fibroadenomas. Both are easily told apart on ultrasound.
Breast cyst
A fluid-filled sac, more common between ages 35 and 50. It can grow and shrink with the menstrual cycle. If it causes no complaint no treatment is needed; if painful and large it can be drained with a needle.
Fibroadenoma
A benign lump common in young women: firm, smooth-edged, movable and usually painless. It often does not grow; it is diagnosed with ultrasound and, if needed, needle biopsy.
When is it removed?
- If it grows quickly
- If imaging or biopsy findings are suspicious
- If it causes marked symptoms or the patient wishes
The definite distinction is made by examination and imaging. Do not try to judge a new lump yourself.
