Fibrocystic change is the natural response of breast tissue to hormones. It is very common, especially in women aged 20–50, and is not considered a disease.
Symptoms
- Breast tenderness and swelling that increase before the period
- A lumpy, rubbery feel of the breast tissue
- Cysts that grow and shrink with the period
Does it cause cancer?
Generally no. Only in certain rare tissue types is the risk slightly raised, and this is assessed after examination and imaging.
Follow-up and relief
Regular examination and age-appropriate imaging are done. A supportive bra, less caffeine and, when needed, painkillers can help. If you notice a new, different lump, do not wait to be seen.
Knowing your own breast tissue matters: a self-check helps you notice changes early.
