Breast Pain (Mastalgia): When to Worry?

Breast pain (mastalgia) is a complaint most women have at some point in life. It is usually harmless and related to hormone fluctuations.

Types of pain

  • Cyclical pain: Starts before the period, felt in both breasts and eases with the period.
  • Non-cyclical pain: Unrelated to the period; usually in one area.
  • Pain not from the breast: May come from the chest wall or muscles.

For relief

  • Wear a suitable, supportive bra.
  • Try cutting down on caffeine and salt.
  • Keeping a pain diary helps show the link with the cycle.
  • If your doctor thinks it appropriate, painkillers or hormonal regulation can be considered.

When an examination is needed

See a doctor if the pain is one-sided and constant, if there is a lump, skin change or nipple discharge with it, or if it affects daily life.

Pain alone is not a sign of cancer; but new pain that does not go away should be assessed.
