Reconstruction is rebuilding the breast after mastectomy. It is not compulsory; it is a matter of choice and its timing can be changed.
When is it done?
- Immediate: In the same operation as the mastectomy.
- Delayed: After treatments are finished, sometimes months later.
Which methods exist?
- Implant: Directly, or first with an expander.
- Your own tissue: Using tissue from the abdomen, back or another area.
- Combined techniques: Using both methods together.
When deciding
The need for radiotherapy, your body build, general health and expectations are weighed together. If radiotherapy is needed, the method and timing are planned accordingly. The decision is made jointly with the plastic surgery team before surgery.
Not having reconstruction is also a completely valid choice; you can change your mind later.
