Arm Exercises and Wound Care After Breast Surgery

After breast surgery, regular wound care and exercises started on time make healing and regaining arm movement easier. The written instructions you are given always take priority.

Wound care

  • Keep the wound clean and dry; follow the dressing instructions.
  • Time showers as your doctor advises.
  • Tell us if you notice redness, discharge or fever.

If you have a drain

Record the drain output and fluid each day and bring it to your check-up. Take care that the drain does not kink or come out.

Arm and shoulder exercises

  • Start with gentle hand, wrist and elbow movements.
  • Add shoulder exercises gradually, at the time your physiotherapist or doctor suggests.
  • Do not force through pain; progress slowly and regularly.

If you notice swelling or a feeling of heaviness in the arm, tell us without waiting.
