Breast Problems While Breastfeeding: Cracks, Hardness and Mastitis

Most breast problems during breastfeeding are solved easily with the right technique and early measures. Some signs, however, need a specialist’s assessment.

Common problems

  • Cracked nipples: Usually due to the baby not latching properly.
  • Blocked duct: A hard, painful area forms in the breast.
  • Engorgement: The breasts become tight when the milk comes in.

What helps?

  • Make sure the baby latches deeply; get help from a lactation consultant if needed.
  • Feed often and comfortably; massage gently towards the blocked area.
  • A warm or cool compress after feeding can relieve discomfort.

When to see a doctor

Redness, fever, shivering or a hard area that does not improve within 24–48 hours may be a sign of mastitis or abscess. In that case, do not delay an examination.

Remember: In most cases, continuing to breastfeed is safe for both mother and baby; still, ask your doctor about any medicines.
